Sermon Notes

“ … you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” Acts 1:8

A model of mission that radiates from a strong home base.

1.    “The Centre” and the “Rest of the World”… it’s NOT “either/or” it’s “both/and”!

“ … you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth”

2.    Respond to needs…  don’t offer people what they don’t ask for

“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:11

3.     Understand context…  listen, learn, grow and serve

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter – when you see the naked to clothe him, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?” Isaiah 58:6-7

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!  All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation” 2 Corinthians 5:17-19

4.    Form good partnerships…  based on relationship and trust

“I thank my God every time I remember you.  In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 1: 3-6

5.    Know it will be messy… but PERSEVERE in FAITH and PRAY and CELEBRATE SUCCESSES however “small”…  our labour is not in vain!

“Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labour in the Lord is not in vain” 1 Corinthians 15:58

“But you are the ones chosen by God, chosen for the high calling of priestly work, chosen to be a holy people, God’s instruments to do his work and speak out for him, to tell others of the night-and-day difference he made for you – from nothing to something, from rejected to accepted”  1 Peter 2:9 (Message)

“It is not the church of God that has a mission in the world but the God of mission who has a church in the world.” Rowan Williams
