Praying with Habakkuk
Praying to God can be both simple and complicated. Habakkuk prays on behalf of his people to God during adversity. He starts off with petitioning honest, hard, and real questions to God, in light of his situation. God finally responds, but it’s not the response he’s expecting, nor in the timing he was hoping for. After a period of processing Habakkuk concludes by praising God and trusting HIS plans and timing.
The message of Habakkuk gives us the tools of how to pray during these times, and a deeper insight into God’s big picture plan.
Following Jesus is no easy ride – the life we are called to as disciples is a life that is full of struggles and challenges. Not only are there the inward battles to fight against; our own weaknesses and temptations, but there is also the endless push-back of a world that doesn’t acknowledge God, and all the heartbreaks and discouragements of life in a fallen world.
In the midst of all those challenges, the Bible repeatedly urges us to ‘stand firm’ and gives us the resources we need to make us able to do that. Across the first three Sundays of January we’ll be focusing on three of the places in Paul’s letters where that command can be found, exploring what it means in practical terms, and what Paul says about the why and the how of Christian steadfastness.
