GENTLENESS — The Proper Application Of Power

Sunday 27th September, 2015

Rev. Keith Jobberns

Bible Reading:  Galatians 5:22-26

…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25

1. Gentleness is:

Not weakness but power under control

2. A family trait of God’s people:

Moses

Now the man Moses was very meek, more than all men that were on the face of the earth.

Numbers 12:3 (RSV)

Paul

Though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse taking care of her children.

1 Thessalonians 2:6, 7

Jesus

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

Matthew 11:29

3. What will gentleness look like where I exercise power?

a. Considerate

By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you.

2 Corinthians 10:1

b. Tender

But you, man of God …. and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

1 Timothy 6:11

c. Restorative

Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently.

Galatians 6:1

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Colossians 3:12, 13

d. Inclusive

And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.  Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth.

2 Timothy 2:24, 25

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

1 Peter 3:15
